The Arab league announced the termination of the monitoring
mission in Syria. This announcement comes shortly after the mission was
suspended in wake of the attack by Syrian forces on Homs. During that attack
hundreds of civilians were reported to be killed by indiscriminate shelling on
the part of the Syrian military. Some analysts believe that the termination of
the monitoring mission is an acknowledgement by the Arab League that Assad has
lost legitimacy. The Arab League may now be poised for a unilateral call for Assad
to step down. Alternately, the Arab League may back a UN resolution to the same
end.
